Are you looking for a truly symbolic and traditional wedding ring? Why not consider a Claddagh wedding ring? Whether you are of Irish descent or not, this type of wedding ring is definitely unique!

‘Let love and friendship reign’ is the motto associated with this Celtic ring. History states that the ring originated in Claddagh, a fishing village near Galway City, Ireland. This ring is traditionally given as a token of love or used as a Claddagh wedding ring. The design, ascribed to Galway native Richard Joyce, first made its appearance during the reign of Queen Mary II in the 17th century.

Claddagh wedding rings have two hands holding a heart with a crown on top. The heart symbolizes love, the hands stand for friendship, while the crown is a sign of loyalty. There is an expression associated with the Claddagh wedding rings: “With my two hands I give you my heart, and crown it with my love.” A variation of the original design is a Fenian Claddagh which has no crown; only two hearts and two hands.

How you wear the ring will indicate your present romantic state. When the ring is worn on the left hand with the heart facing inward towards the knuckles, this indicates that the wearer is married. If the ring is facing outward with the crown nearest to the knuckles, the wearer is said to be engaged. You can wear the ring on your right hand with the heart facing outward if you want to convey that you are not romantically attached but looking for love. If you are in a relationship, turn the Claddagh ring inwards while wearing it on the right hand. A Claddagh wedding band is never bought for oneself. It is given to a loved one or passed on from mother to daughter.

This Irish Celtic ring can be made of titanium, platinum, solid sterling silver, or gold in different colors and weights. Some rings are a combination of these materials. A trusted jeweler can guide you in choosing the right precious metal for your Claddagh wedding rings.

Claddagh wedding rings made in Ireland carry an official hallmark as required by Irish law since 1637. You can find the official insignia of the Irish Assay Office in Dublin Castle, the traditional letter symbol for the year it was made and the fineness mark authenticating the purity of the gold used on the ring.

There are many new designs of Claddagh rings. This was brought about by its popularity not only within the Irish community but with other nationalities as well. There are designs with the heart filled with tiny emeralds, diamonds and other precious and semi-precious stones. The band can be lined with gemstones as well. Birthstone Claddagh rings are also in fashion. Again, seek advice from a trusted jeweler before making your choice of stone. They can give you information on how to assess the purity of a gemstone.

Some rings have a two-sided heart wherein the heart can be turned 180 degrees to show the other side. For the very romantic, some Claddagh wedding rings are solid bands with the inscription: ‘Mo Anam Cara’. This means: My Soul Mate.

There are designs with engraved symbols instead of molded ones. Celtic patterns such as eternity knots can be featured on the bands itself. For a more masculine wedding band, the mens claddagh can be crafted with squared-off edges.

One can even find a two-part Claddagh wedding ring. It is made up of two rings, a top band (wedding ring) in yellow gold with a heart shaped groove and 3 diamonds representing the crown. The bottom band (engagement ring) is made of 14 carat white gold. It has a heart shaped diamond which fits the groove of the top band. You can also find a Claddagh puzzle ring wherein the two hands can either be separated or clasped together over the heart.

Remember, whatever design or material is used for the Claddagh wedding band you choose, its value lies in its symbolism and not necessarily on its monetary worth. This Irish design is steeped in history and lore, full of sentimental appeal. Shop for a Claddagh wedding band today and ‘Let love and friendship reign.’

Most of us like the fun of catching fish on a lure we made. While my site carries some great lures and other fishing supplies, along with great flies hand made in the U.S.A., still there is nothing quite like catching a lunker with your own creation. I have always been a big fan of the wedding Claddagh ring style lures, as they attract a variety of fish. I have been making my own for several years.

You will need to pick up some spinner blades at your local fishing supply store. Don’t worry about style a whole lot. They need to be fairly small. Stroll over to the lure section and look at the Claddagh wedding ring lures on sale. That size blade is what you want! Now for the hooks, purchase the size which corresponds with your fishing locations and habits. If you want to buy snelled hooks, do so, but try to buy ones with the longest possible leaders. If you have no good leader at home, get some now if you plan to tie your own hooks. Be sure to purchase some snap-on swivel hooks. Now go to a bead store (many fishing supplies carry lots of beads, but you will have a cheaper and better selection at a bead hobby store). Get a number of small red or chartreuse beads (I like the red ones) and if possible find some larger beads which have flat spots to reflect the light.

Now you have all the supplies you need! Tie a hook to your leader, or if you are using snelled hooks, clip off the top, leaving only the hook and longest possible leader. Now st Claddagh wedding ring on two small beads, and the larger reflective bead, followed by two more small beads. If you do not use the larger bead, add one or two smaller beads. Next goes the blade. It has a hole already in it, and works great just strung on the line. Now tie the end of the leader to your snap swivel, and you are done!

With a fishing worm, this is a dynamite lure. If you want to fish without natural bait, instead of a hook, use a tied fly. It will work great. These lures will keep your lines tight, at just a fraction of the cost of the commercial ones.
